August's coastal treasure - Holkham

Written by Georgia Dawson on

Holkham, Norfolk

Holkham is our August coastal treasure.

Situated on the north-west Norfolk coast lies Holkham. Just two miles from Wells-next-the-Sea and four miles from Burnham Overy Staithe, Holkham is an ideal location for exploring the beautiful Norfolk coast. Holkham is the home to SALT – our office is based just a 15 minute walk from the beach.

The beautiful, unspoilt stretch of golden sand, the wonderful, picturesque Holkham National Nature Reserve and the breath-taking Holkham Hall make the coastal village of Holkham so iconic.

When walking from Lady Anne’s Drive towards the sea, you’ll be greeted by an astonishing semi-circular bay, which forms a shallow lagoon at very high tides. When the tide is in, Holkham is a perfect location for dogs wishing to cool down and children who want to swim in the shallow water. When the tide is out, the incredible goldens sands are revealed and the beach turns into a haven for children making sandcastles and adults sunbathing in the glorious sunshine. The sandy landscape at Holkham has even been used in films – actress Gwyneth Paltrow walked across the beach at the end of ‘Shakespeare in Love’ (1999).

A range of embankments started to be created around the shoreline from 1639 onwards. By 1859, around 800 hectares of saltmarsh had been transformed to farmland. In the late 19th Century, the 3rd Earl of Leicester decided to plant pine trees along the dunes - this was done to protect the farmland from the sea and this went on to create the Holkham National Nature Reserve. Nowadays, the Nature Reserve is brimming with wildlife and plants.

The incredible Holkham Hall stands at the heart of the 25,000 acre Estate. The 18th Century Hall is home to Thomas Coke, the Earl of Leicester, and his family. The Hall was built by Thomas Coke, the 1st Early of Leicester, and is complete with breath-taking state rooms, original furniture, a 50ft pressed plaster dome ceiling and fabulous paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Claude, Gaspar Poussin and Gainsborough.
