December’s coastal treasure – Thornham

Written by Georgia Dawson on

Thornham, Norfolk

Thornham is our December coastal treasure.

Just over four miles east of Hunstanton and four miles west of Burnham Deepdale lies Thornham. The small village of Thornham sits on the beautiful royal Norfolk coast and is within the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The RSPB Titchwell Marsh and the Holme Dunes National Reserve are only one mile away.

The village of Thornham is very popular with walkers, cyclists, bird watchers and photographers all year round. With outstanding coastline and surrounding beautiful countryside, there are many great opportunities to explore the Norfolk coast by foot or bicycle. The wonderful Peddars Way joins the Norfolk Coast Path at Holme-next-the-Sea, just 1.5 miles from Thornham. The Norfolk Coast Path offers picturesque sea views and stretches from Hunstanton to Hopton-on-Sea. However, Peddars Way offers a different experience – rich in history, Peddars Way offers a delightful remoteness, perfect for jumping on a bike or popping on your hiking boots. Peddars Way runs from Knettishall Heath in Suffolk to Holme-next-the-Sea on the Norfolk coast.

The royal Norfolk coast is superb for bird watching. The RSPB Titchwell Marsh offers reedbeds and both fresh and salt water lagoons, perfect for avocets, bearded tits and marsh harriers. Alternatively, the Holme Dunes National Reserve is wonderfully located to attract migrating birds. The dunes are also home to various other wildlife species including natterjack toads, butterflies and dragonflies.

Thornham has three pubs/restaurants, The Lifeboat Inn, The Chequers and The Orange Tree. On the outskirts of the pretty village, Thornham Deli, Drove Orchards and Eric’s Fish and Chips can be found.
