Wells-next-the-Sea harbour in autumn

Wells-next-the-Sea is our October coastal treasure.

The beautiful harbour town of Wells-next-the-Sea is located along the north Norfolk coast, directly next to Holkham and half way between Stiffkey and Burnham Overy Staithe. Wells-next-the-Sea provides opportunities for sightseeing, bird watching, picturesque walks and fun for the children too. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is no wonder Wells-next-the-Sea is popular with visitors year after year.

In Tudor times, the famous harbour of Wells-next-the-Sea was one of the great ports of east England, importing coal for the miners of the north east. In the 18th Century, the town became nationally important as a producer of malt, supplying large quantities to the Dutch. The grand granary which overlooks the harbour dates back to 1903 and is an eye-catching spectacle of the popular harbour. Nowadays, the picturesque harbour is still used by sailing and crabbing boats and is protected by salt marshes from the open sea.

Wells-next-the-Sea town offers a wonderful mix of traditional and contemporary shops, as well as delicious cafes and, of course, our sister brand Norfolk Cottage’s office. In the town, you can find French’s Fish Shop, Grey Seal Coffee, John’s Rock Shop, Simply Norfolk, Redfearn & Daughter, Arthur Howell Bakery, and much more. Some of the wonderful buildings in Wells town are hundreds of years old and include former coaching inns and public houses.

The beach at Wells-next-the-Sea is truly magical. You can hop on a miniature train that takes you one mile down to the coast or you can walk from the town to the beach. Wells is part of the largest coastal nature reserve in England and Wales and offers a beautiful sandy beach, shady pinewoods and a stunning row of colourful beach huts. The beach stretches for a mile towards Holkham and is the perfect destination for a family day out with the dogs.
